Roncalli College, Timaru: Caitlin Bradley won the senior category of the Caritas SINGout4JUSTICE song writing competition with her song ‘Stronger Together.’
Kavanagh College, Dunedin: Tobias Devereux recently won the University of Otago Junior Maths competition in which he achieved an almost perfect score. Tobias also gained High Distinction in the ICAS (Australasian) Science Competition.
St Hilda’s Collegiate School, Dunedin: Madeleine Whittaker has been accepted for the prestigious Youth Science Forum in London. Issie Robertson’s ethics paper has been published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, this is a world first for a secondary school student.
Canterbury, South Canterbury and West Coast Regions:
Marian College, Christchurch: Meg Elliott and Kimberley Shaw achieved the Elite award in the Language Perfect World Championships (placing in the top 0.2% of 350,000 competitors from around the world).
Kapiti Coast, Horowhenua, Wairarapa, Wellington, Nelson, Buller and Marlborough Regions:
St Benedict’s School, Khandallah: Nisha Agrawalhas gained the best test results in the ICAS Science Assessment as the top Year 3 in the New Zealand and the entire Pacific region.
St Patrick’s College, Kilbirnie: Xavier English presented a speech about the use of virtual reality for training in health and safety situations, which led to awards at the Wellington Regional Eureka Awards: he received the Ministry for Social Development Silver Scholarship ($2500) and the Ministry of Education Gold Scholarship ($5000). Angus Hay-Chapman, Xavier English and Yasheek Rosario won third place in the National Final of the 2017 Monetary Policy Challenge. Marcus Tumaai won a second and a third placing at the National Samoan Speech competition.
Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt: Ayan Manyang Makoii was selected to model at NZ Fashion Week for the first time, walking for, Salasai, Jimmy D and Wynn Hamlyn. Tessa Barlow is one of 13 young New Zealanders selected to be a World Vision and Sanitarium Youth Ambassador in 2018. She will work alongside World Vision staff to motivate and engage young people in the 40 Hour Famine.
St Mary’s College, Wellington: St Mary’s College First XV featured in an article on Stuff as the country’s top girls’ rugby college team, joining in the celebrations at Wellington’s Civic Square on Wednesday, October 4 which was held for the Black Ferns, winners of the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Rangitikei and Hawkes Bay Regions:
Cornerstone Christian School: The student team was one of the six winners in the Tournament of Minds competition which has grown in popularity over its 30 years in New Zealand. The tournament has 10 categories, including engineering and mathematics, language and literature, and social sciences. The ultimate goal was to get to the finals in Australia.
Thames Valley, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Tairawhiti Regions:
John Paul College: Won the annual inter-school Public Speaking Competition, the Chanel Shield, by one point.
Northland and Auckland Regions:
St Dominic’s Catholic College, Auckland: Gabi Brayne, Year 13, has won a scholarship valued at $2,700 to fund tutorial support for her NZQA Scholarship studies.
St Peter’s College, Auckland: The Senior Concert Band won the Gold Medal at the New Zealand Concert Band Championships.
St Joseph’s Catholic School, Orakei, Auckland: Isabella Lee’s artwork was selected for publishing in Toitoi, a quarterly journal of children’s writing. De La Salle College, Mangere, Auckland: The school featured in an article ‘Diverse and Delicious at De La Salle’ in the Education Gazette, 25 September 2017.
McAuley High School, Otahuhu Auckland: Staff member Ms Angela Hart, has been accepted as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society for her contributions to Geography and for creative teaching.
Liston College, Auckland: Alphaeus Ang excelled in recent Chess tournaments. He is now New Zealand Junior Chess Champion, New Zealand Junior Rapid Chess Champion, and New Zealand Junior Blitz Chess Champion.

St Patrick’s College, Silverstream students Bede Kane, Luke Mannix, Connor Maxwell and Keegan Phipps featured in the Hutt News. Arising from work in their business studies class, the boys decided to examine the impact of poverty within Upper Hutt. They surveyed students at Maoribank School, and discovered many were going to school without enough warm clothing and some were getting sick as a result. The boys fundraised to donate 100 beanies to Maoribank School students.
